Marine Sanctuary
Apo Island · Philippines
Apo Island's community-protected marine sanctuary is a textbook example of what happens when a reef is left alone — table corals, brain corals, and massive barrel sponges cover every surface, and reef fish densities rival anywhere in the Coral Triangle. The famous turtle cleaning stations here see green and hawksbill turtles queuing up for wrasse to remove parasites, and the animals are completely relaxed around divers. A gently sloping reef crest gives way to a vertical wall dropping beyond 40 meters, suiting every certification level.
