American eels migrate through coastal cave systems on their way between freshwater rivers and their deep-sea Atlantic spawning grounds, and individuals are occasionally spotted resting in the substrate near the cave entrance. Their presence in the halocline zone highlights the ecological connectivity between the cave system and the open ocean.
