Stalactite formations

iNaturalist · CC BY 2.0

The stalactites and stalagmites of Padre Nuestro formed during the last glacial maximum when sea levels were 120 metres lower and the cave was entirely above water. Their presence confirms the cave's geological age and provides anchor points for a delicate microbial community that forms the base of the cave food web.

How is this calculated?

Sighting evidence is compiled from iNaturalist observation records within a set proximity radius, filtered for quality-grade observations. “Last confirmed” is the date of the most recent research-grade record. Record count covers a rolling 24-month window. Confidence reflects record count, recency, and consistency of seasonal signal.
