Isla Los Testigos Reef
Los Testigos · Venezuela
The main reef system wrapping the largest island of Los Testigos is an almost completely undisturbed Caribbean reef ecosystem, where coral cover exceeds 60 percent and staghorn thickets shelter enormous populations of parrotfish, surgeonfish, and snapper that have never experienced fishing pressure. The reef terrace runs from 5 to 22 meters before dropping into deeper blue, and the clarity of the water — often exceeding 35 meters horizontal visibility — allows wide-angle photography that captures the full scale of pristine reef architecture. Whale sharks pass through seasonally between December and April, feeding in the plankton-rich surface waters around the island group.
