Crystal Bay
Nusa Penida · Indonesia
Crystal Bay is Nusa Penida's most celebrated dive site and the world's premier location to encounter the ocean sunfish (mola mola). A sheltered bay opens onto a submerged pinnacle that drops steeply to 40 m, where cleaning stations in the 18–30 m range attract mola mola ascending from the deep Lombok Strait thermocline between July and October. Cold upwellings (sometimes as low as 16°C) roll in from the south, creating a thermocline shock that keeps the site productive but demands a thick wetsuit. Outside mola mola season the site still rewards with coral gardens, sweetlips, and the occasional reef shark. Currents are mild in the bay but can surge on the outer pinnacle.
