Long-spined black sea urchins have recovered at The Maze following the catastrophic Caribbean-wide die-off of the 1980s, with dense populations now grazing the reef algae and maintaining clear substrate for coral settlement. Their recovery is a sign of improved reef ecosystem function at this site.
